How teens make money reselling online (without getting scammed)

Apr 25, 2026

Reselling — buying low, selling higher — is one of the cleanest ways to learn business at any age. You see the difference between revenue and profit in real time. You learn pricing, photography, and customer service. And you can start with $20.

1

How it actually works

  1. You find a thing for cheap (Goodwill, garage sale, clearance rack).
  2. You list it on a marketplace at a higher price.
  3. Someone buys it.
  4. You ship it.
  5. You keep the difference, minus fees.
Real example · Sam, 14

Sam finds a vintage Nike windbreaker at Goodwill for $5. Lists it on Mercari for $45. Sells in 3 days. Mercari fees: $5. Shipping: paid by buyer. Sam clears about $35 profit on a $5 investment.

Not every item works that way. But over a month of trying, the patterns become clear.

2

What to actually look for

Categories that consistently sell well for resale:

  • Vintage clothing (90s/2000s sportswear)
  • Lego sets (especially complete in original box)
  • Video games (PS2/PS3 era, classic Nintendo)
  • Books (textbooks, niche hobbyist)
  • Home decor (vintage Pyrex, mid-century lamps)
  • Athletic shoes in good condition

Look up sold listings on eBay before buying. If sold prices average $30 and you can buy for $5, that is real opportunity.

3

Where to sell (and the age rules)

  • Mercari — easy listings, lower fees
  • Poshmark — best for clothing
  • eBay — biggest reach, harder learning curve
  • Facebook Marketplace — local, no shipping
  • Depop — clothing, younger audience

Each platform takes 10–20%. Always price with fees + shipping in mind.

Most platforms require 18+. Under-18s: ask a parent if you can use their account, with you doing the work and an honest revenue split.

4

Track every dollar

Reselling teaches the gap between revenue and profit better than any textbook.

WhatSam\'s Nike windbreaker
Revenue (sale price)$45
Cost of goods-$5
Platform fee (~11%)-$5
Cleaning supplies-$0.50
Profit~$34

If Sam had paid $8 shipping and missed it, profit would have been $26. Always do the math before listing.

5

Photos sell things

  • Natural light, near a window
  • Plain background (white wall, bedsheet)
  • At least 5 photos per item, including any flaws
  • Be honest about flaws. Returns destroy profit. Honest listings build a reputation.
Avoid scams
  • ✗ Never accept payment outside the platform. The platform protects you.
  • ✗ Be careful of buyers who immediately want to switch to text or Cash App. Always a scam.
  • ✓ Save tracking numbers. Always.
What to try this week

This weekend

  • Visit one Goodwill or thrift store with $20.
  • Look up sold prices on eBay before buying anything.
  • Open a notes app to log: date, item, cost, listed price, sold price, fees, profit.
