Tech support scams

A scary popup says your computer is infected and demands you call a number. The "tech support" person locks your computer until you pay.

How it works

You're browsing and a giant red popup fills your screen:

"WARNING! Your computer is infected with 7 viruses! Call Microsoft support: 1-800-XXX-XXXX immediately!"

Or you get a phone call:

"Hi, this is Mike from Microsoft. We've detected unusual activity on your device."

You call (or answer). They walk you through letting them remote in. They show you "scary" things on your computer that are actually normal. They charge you $200–$1,000 for "support." Sometimes they install real malware. Sometimes they steal your bank info.

Why people fall for it

  • The popup looks scary and official.
  • "Microsoft" sounds like an authority.
  • Many people aren't sure what's normal on their computer.
  • Older relatives (parents, grandparents) are often targeted hardest.

Red flags

  • Microsoft, Apple, or Google will NEVER call you about your computer. Ever.
  • Real virus warnings don't include a phone number.
  • Real tech support won't ask for remote access unless you contacted them first through their official site.
  • Pressure to act now — "your data is being stolen as we speak!"
  • Asks you to pay in gift cards or crypto.

How to stay safe

  1. Close the browser tab or restart the computer to dismiss popups. Never call the number.
  2. If you think there's a real problem, call your school's tech help, an Apple Store, or an actual local repair shop you can verify.
  3. Never give a stranger remote access to your computer.
  4. Help older relatives. This scam targets parents and grandparents very hard. Show them what a real popup looks like.
